Inside the White House Bible Study group

For the first time in at least 100 years, the US Cabinet has a bible study group. What do they learn? What does Donald Trump make of it? And why aren’t women allowed to teach? Every Wednesday, some of the world’s most powerful people meet in a conference room in Washington DC to learn about God. The location can’t be revealed – the Secret Service won’t allow it – but the members can. Vice-President Mike Pence. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo. Education Secretary Betsy DeVos. Energy Secretary Rick Perry. Attorney General Jeff Sessions. The list goes on. In total,...

Apple iOS 11.3.1 Release: It’s The Big One

This was not meant to happen. iOS 11.3 had the eyes of the world on it and Apple AAPL +0.73% seemed so confident the company immediately moved onto testing iOS 11.4, which is not due for release for several months. Instead, a litany of bugs (a significant number are serious) means the urgent release of iOS 11.3.1 is now unavoidable and essential… Tech writer Bradley Chambers perhaps summed it up best when commenting on the iOS 11.3 bug which broke Apple’s MDM (Mobile Device Management) protocol leaving participating companies and institutions unable to remotely manage and update employees’ iPhones...

Why AI isn’t going to solve Facebook’s fake news problem

Moderation will always be a problem on a platform this huge. Facebook has a lot of problems right now, but one that’s definitely not going away any time soon is fake news. As the company’s user base has grown to include more than a quarter of the world’s population, it has (understandably) struggled to control what they all post and share. For Facebook, unwanted content can be anything from mild nudity to serious violence, but what’s proved to be most sensitive and damaging for the company is hoaxes and misinformation — especially when it has a political bent. So...

Conservationists use astronomy software to save species

Researchers are using astronomical techniques used to study distant stars to survey endangered species. The team of scientists is developing a system to automatically identify animals using a camera that has been mounted on a drone. It is able to identify them from the heat they give off, even when vegetation is in the way. Details of the system were presented at the annual meeting of the European Astronomical Society in Liverpool, UK. The idea was developed by Serge Wich, a conservationist at Liverpool John Moores University, and Dr Steve Longmore, an astrophysicist at the same university. He says...

Dozen black holes found at galactic centre

A dozen black holes may lie at the centre of our galaxy, the Milky Way, researchers have said. A new analysis provides support for a decades-old prediction that “supermassive” black holes at the centres of galaxies are surrounded by many smaller ones. However, previous searches of the Milky Way’s centre, where the nearest supermassive black hole is located, have found little evidence for this. Details appear in the journal Nature. Charles Hailey from Columbia University in New York and colleagues used archival data from Nasa’s Chandra X-ray telescope to come to their conclusions. They report the discovery of a...
